FOCKE-WULF FW190a

A truly fearful fighter of the German Luftwaffe, the rare Focke-Wulf Fw190A, nicknamed 'Butcher Bird', is a type that was completely absent from the world's skies for over half a century. In 2004 an accurately reconstructed example flew in Germany, finally breaking that drought and bringing this distinctive shape back into the skies of the world. This is that very same aircraft, which has been a feature of Classic Fighters Airshows since its arrival in 2011.

This striking machine resides right here at Omaka in the AHC's 'Dangerous Skies' exhibition, so can be viewed daily.

Despite there having been over 20,000 Fw190s built, this Fw190A is one of just a handful of examples to be seen flying anywhere in the world. For this reason we are all very thankful to owner Murray Miers of the Omaka-based Chariots of Fire Fighter Collection, and to pilot Frank Parker who is the only pilot to have flown this aircraft since its arrival in New Zealand.
